How to choose a skating school

Group or private lessons. A group is cheaper and more fun, and children learn from each other. A one-to-one lesson gives the fastest progress if you’re starting from scratch, are afraid of falling or want to work on something specific — braking, for example.

Age and level of the group. Ask how the school splits up its students. An adult beginner learns differently from an eight-year-old, and someone who can already skate will be bored in a class for complete beginners.

Where classes take place. A smooth, closed-off square or a sports hall is a good start — no cars, bikes or kerbs. Also check what happens in winter and when it rains: some schools move indoors.

Gear. Before your first lesson, find out whether the school lends out skates and pads or whether you need your own. A helmet and a full set of pads are standard in class.

Questions about learning to skate

At what age can a child start learning to skate?

Each school sets its own age limit — it depends on whether the child can stand in skates unaided and follow the instructor’s directions. Ask about the youngest group and whether a parent can stay for the first classes.

Can an adult learn to skate from scratch?

Yes. Many schools run separate groups for adult beginners as well as private lessons. The first classes usually cover stance, falling safely and braking.

How many lessons does it take to skate on your own?

It depends on the person and on how much you skate between classes. Usually after a few lessons students can set off, skate and brake on their own; smooth turns and skating around town take regular practice.

Do I need my own skates?

Not always — some schools lend out gear for the first classes. You’ll find this in the school’s description or when you sign up. When buying skates, choose the size by your foot length.

Does Bogdanca run the classes?

No. Classes are run by independent schools and instructors; you arrange dates, prices and sign-ups directly with them. We fit and service the gear.

How can a school join the map?
