All upcoming launchesWhen fitness skates make sense
Choose fitness skates for smooth bike paths and routes of a dozen kilometres or more, once you’ve mastered the basics. A soft, ventilated boot is lighter and keeps your feet cooler, and bigger wheels hold their speed longer and roll more smoothly over uneven tarmac.
For learning from scratch and skating in the city, the hard boot of urban skates works better. A soft cuff gives the ankle less support, so the foot rolls inwards more easily. A comparison of both designs: urban or fitness skates.
Wheel diameter
| Wheels | Ride character |
|---|---|
| 80 mm | relaxed recreation, easier speed control |
| 84–90 mm | longer routes, higher cruising speed |
| 100–110 mm | training and distance, needs confident braking |
A bigger wheel means a higher centre of gravity and a longer braking distance. For your first season, 80–84 mm is enough.
What to look at
Check what the frame is made of (aluminium is stiffer than composite), whether it can be unbolted and the largest wheel diameter it takes. In fitness skates the frame is sometimes riveted on permanently, so switching to bigger wheels later isn’t always possible. Choose the size as with any inline skates: by foot length in millimetres.

Frequently asked questions
Are fitness skates good for beginners?
You can start on them, but learning goes faster in a hard boot. If you choose fitness skates to start with, pick a model with 80 mm wheels and a stiff cuff.
Which wheels for fitness skates: 80, 84 or 90 mm?
For your first season, 80–84 mm: they’re more stable and easier to brake on. Choose 90 mm or more once you skate confidently and do longer routes.
Are fitness skates suitable for the city?
On smooth paths, yes; on kerbs and paving stones, not so much. A soft boot copes worse with impacts and side loads, and a longer frame makes tight turns harder.
Is a soft boot sized differently from a hard one?
The rule is the same: foot length in millimetres plus no more than 5 mm of room. A soft boot that’s too long quickly stretches and stops holding the heel.
