What’s most useful

Socks make the biggest difference: thin, higher than the cuff and without thick seams. A cotton trainer sock slides down in the boot and ends in a rub on the ankle, which is easy to mistake for badly sized skates.

A bag or backpack with a separate skate carrier protects the rest of your things from the dirt on the wheels and makes it easier to get to where you skate.

Care after skating

After every session, undo your skates and take the liners out to dry — that does more than any spray. Use freshener between liner washes.

Bearing oil or grease comes in handy every 2–3 months of regular skating, after cleaning. How to do it step by step is described in the guide inline skate bearings: ABEC, ILQ, Swiss. Parts that wear out are in the inline skate parts section.

Frequently asked questions

What socks for inline skating?

Thin, higher than the cuff and made of a sweat-wicking material. Thick socks don’t improve the fit, they just cause pressure and rubbing.

What should I lubricate skate bearings with?

An oil or grease intended for bearings. Penetrating products such as WD-40 wash out the lubricant and aren’t suitable for lubrication.

How do I get rid of the smell from my skates?

Dry the liners outside the shell after every session and hand wash them from time to time. A freshening spray helps between washes.
