Measure your head circumference with a tape measure above the eyebrows. A helmet should sit securely even before you fasten the strap.

How to choose helmet size

Measure your head circumference with a tape measure: about a centimetre above the eyebrows, above the ears and across the most prominent point at the back. Compare the result with the range in centimetres given for the size. If you’re on the border, try both sizes — heads differ in shape, not just circumference.

Fit test

  1. Put the helmet on level, with the front edge two fingers above your eyebrows.
  2. Tighten the circumference adjuster and shake your head. The helmet mustn’t move, even with the strap undone.
  3. Adjust the side straps so they meet just below your ears.
  4. Fasten the chin strap: you should be able to fit one finger under it.

What to look for when choosing

For inline skating, a skate-style helmet with a deeper shell that comes lower over the sides and back of the head works best — falling backwards happens more often on skates than on a bike. Such a helmet will also serve on a scooter, a skateboard and a bike. Lazer helmets with KinetiCore technology have blocks in the foam that deform on impact and absorb its energy.

After a hard impact, replace the helmet, even if it looks intact. We cover all protection in the guide how to choose pads and a helmet; wrist, elbow and knee sets are in the pads section.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my head for a helmet?

With a tape measure, about 1 cm above the eyebrows and across the widest point at the back of the head. Measure twice and take the larger result.

Is a cycling helmet enough for inline skating?

Yes, if it fits well and doesn’t move on your head. A skate-style helmet comes lower over the sides and back of the head, which helps when you fall backwards.

Do I need to replace a helmet after a fall?

After a hard impact, yes. The foam inside deforms permanently and won’t absorb a second impact the same way.

Can I wear a hat under a helmet?

A thin hat or headband, yes. It’s better to take a thick one off, because the helmet stops fitting snugly and may slip.
