If you’re building up your protection in stages, start with wrist guards and a helmet. When you fall you instinctively put your hands out, and the hard splint in the guard takes the impact and lets your hand slide along the tarmac. A helmet protects against a rarer but the most serious injury.
The simplest option is a set of three pairs — wrists, elbows, knees — because you size it using one circumference chart.
| Item | What to measure |
|---|---|
| Knee pads | knee circumference at the middle of the kneecap |
| Elbow pads | elbow circumference with the arm slightly bent |
| Wrist guards | hand or wrist circumference, according to the manufacturer’s chart |
| Helmet | head circumference above the eyebrows |
If you’re between two pad sizes, choose the smaller: pads should fit snugly and not rotate on the joint. A helmet should sit securely even before you fasten the strap. Measuring and fitting in detail: how to choose pads and a helmet.
Size children’s gear by circumference, not age, and don’t buy it to grow into — a loose pad slips off the moment you fall. Junior sets start from size XXXS. See pads and helmets separately.
Wrist guards. When you fall on skates you most often put your hands out; knees and a helmet come right after.
Yes, especially while learning and after a long break. An adult falls from a greater height and with more weight than a child.
Yes, if it fits well and covers the back of the head. Skate-style urban helmets are designed from the outset for inline skates, scooters, skateboards and bikes.
Measure the circumference of your knee and elbow with a tape measure and compare it with the manufacturer’s chart on the product page. Height and age are not a good guide.
After every hard impact, even if you can’t see any cracks. The foam in a helmet deforms permanently and won’t absorb a second impact the same way.
