In brief

MPC Storm Surge 90 mm XGrip rain wheels are a set of 8 wheels intended solely for skating on wet surfaces — in the rain or when the whole route is flooded. The XGrip compound has increased flexibility and grip, and the MTech Soft Heart, Hard Body construction combines a soft interior with a harder outer layer. They are too soft for dry asphalt.

Who it’s for

  • You skate fast on skates with 90 mm wheels and want to train or race when it rains, too.
  • You have a set for dry conditions and are looking for a second one that you fit for a flooded route.
  • You are putting together a mixed setup: Storm Surge at the front for control, harder wheels at the back for speed.

When to choose something else

  • You skate on dry asphalt — Storm Surge wear out quickly there and roll worse. For dry conditions see Junk VooDoo 90 mm X-Firm.
  • Your frame is for larger wheels — the same rain wheels come in 100 mm, 110 mm and 125 mm.

Key features

XGrip compound
More flexible and grippier than the Firm, X-Firm and XX-Firm hardnesses, which are for skating on dry asphalt.
MTech Soft Heart, Hard Body
The soft interior of the wheel works under load and keeps contact with the surface, while the harder outer layer takes care of the rolling.
Intended for wet surfaces only
The wheels give stability and traction in the rain; on a dry surface their softness speeds up wear and worsens performance.
To combine with dry VooDoo wheels
Many racers skate a mixed setup: Storm Surge at the front for control, VooDoo at the back for speed.

Care and servicing

After skating in the rain, dry the wheels and bearings and do not leave them wet in your bag. Keep this set for wet days, because it wears down quickly on dry asphalt.

Questions and answers

What conditions are the Storm Surge 90 mm wheels for?

Only for skating on wet surfaces: during rain or when the whole route is flooded with water.

Can I skate on dry asphalt with them?

No. They are too soft for that — they will wear out faster and roll worse than wheels for dry surfaces.

How does XGrip differ from Firm, X-Firm and XX-Firm?

XGrip is a compound with increased flexibility and grip, developed for wet routes. Firm, X-Firm and XX-Firm are hardnesses for skating on dry asphalt.

Can Storm Surge be combined with other MPC wheels?

Yes. A popular setup is Storm Surge at the front for control and dry VooDoo at the back for speed.

Are 8 wheels enough for a pair of skates?

Yes, for a pair of four-wheel skates (2 × 4 wheels).
